What's in a Tutoring Session?

While the answer may seem obvious to some, we thought you might want to know what to expect when you begin tutoring with Inspire In-Home Tutoring.

When your Inspire Tutor is assigned to you, he or she will call you to set up the day and time for your first tutoring session. See our Tutoring Tips for Success. What is Tutoring?

Assessment. A good tutor will assess her student's strengths and weaknesses not only at the beginning of their relationship, but throughout the weeks and months as your classes progress. This assessment may take place through observation and evaluation of the student, written or verbal exercises, as well as review of class homework, projects, and tests.

Coursework. As a starting point, we work with our students' class work. Our tutors also go prepared for the sessions with supplemental materials, if needed. It is important that the student master the work given to him in class, before being given more work to do. Supplemental exercises can be used for reinforcement, but they should not leave a student feeling overwhelmed. We can discuss your specific needs when you call to request your tutor. Also, your tutor will be available throughout your relationship with us to provide feedback, answer questions, and give suggestions for improvement.

Homework. No, your tutor will not do your homework for you. Sorry! However, your tutor can help you with the areas you don't understand, review your work before you turn it in, and help you stay organized.

Quizzes and tests. Your tutor can help you review for your upcoming exams. He or she will quiz you and help to make sure you have a good foundation, so that you will walk in to class on test day with confidence!

Remediation. Remediate means "to correct an error." In regards to tutoring, remediation is used to "re-teach" concepts that may have not been understood well, or missed entirely. Most classes build on themselves, and become progressively more difficult. Students need to have a strong foundation in order to learn the new material. The good news is that if something was not understood at the time it was taught in class, it is never too late to learn what was missed.

Additional reinforcement. Some students need or want additional exercises to work on outside of the tutoring sessions to help reinforce what is being taught. We can provide this for you. The one caution here is to not bite off more than you can chew. The goal is success, so in many cases it might be better to reach your class goals first, and then add more to your accomplishments.

Organizational & Study Skills. Many academic challenges stem from not a lack of understanding, but from study and/or organizational skills that can be improved. Your tutor can help keep you on task, and help you learn new ways of learning new information that can last a lifetime.

Not taking a class? No problem! We work with kids and adults who are not enrolled in a class, and want to reinforce old skills, or learn something new. Our tutors will create an individualized plan just for you, depending on your needs. Please call us for details.

Our approach of tailoring your tutoring sessions to your individual needs has been proven to work. This page gives examples of what might take place in your tutoring sessions. Since each student's needs vary, please contact us so we can chat about how best to help you.
